THE KUNFFY FAMILY The artist's grandfather, Simon Kunfi was born in Komlód on 27 June 1816. His wife: JULIANNA SPITZER (1820-1901). They had a little land off Kaposvár, „Ebédvesztő". He bought and let out Gusztáv Bosnyák's 1000-hold land in Somogytúr, inherited by Lajos Kunffy They lived in Berzsenyi Street in Kaposvár. They had a son and a boy The daughter lived in this house for 14 years, she died on 9 June 1895 at her 79. Simon Kunfi's son is Adolf Kunfi, the artist's father born in Balatonfokajár on 19 Dec. 1838. He graduated from a high school of commerce in Nagykanizsa. HE served in Italy in Garibaldi's army from 1860 to 64, then he came back to Somogy and started land renting. He got into fortune with his successful economy He rented land in Orci and Gálosfa (it was the estate of the Festetiches from 1881) and in Varga (in Vargaliget he rented a land from the Governor in Fiume). He built a detached house in Berzsenyi street, Kaposvár in 1877. Later he built a big house at (now) 9 th Dózsa György Street, where he lived until his death .In 1912 he was awarded nobility with prefix of Somogytúr. The Kunffy name was used 10 years earlier. Adolf Kunffy's wife, the artist's mother, HERMINA HOCHSINGER (1846-1918) came of a Veszprém family. Her father, Hochsinger, rented the Nyirád bishop's land. The marriage was on 5 th Jan. 1869. First they lived in Orci renting the estate. Their children are: Lajos, Károly, József and Emma. The mother became the chair lady of the Kaposvár Jewish community, taking pride in charity work. Adolf Kunffy died in Kaposvár at 96 on 4 th March 1934. As for the last garibaldist even the Italian government and king put a wreath. Dr. Lajos Kunffy, painter, lawyer was born in Orci on 2 nd Oct. 1869. He started his legal studies in Budapest 1887.At the same time he attended the Pattern-Designing School in Budapest. After that he is trained in Pál Vágó 's studio. His third legal-study year was spent as military service and he is given a lieutenant-rank after the military exam. In 1890 he went to Munich to attend Simon Hollósy's school for half a year. In 1891 spring he was accepted to the Munich Academy, but he started the next semester in Paris in the autumn, where he graduated from the Academy of Art in 1894. His wife ELLA TILLER (1881-1963), the daughter of János Szabó, a military tailor in Budapest. Their marriage was in Budapest on 17 th March 1901,and they settled down in Paris. Their son, Zoltán was born and christened in Paris. (20 th July 1902). He participated in the Saloon exhibitions, became a well-known artist. He was awarded the knight's cross of the French order of Merit for his work in Culture-diplomacy He said good-by to Paris with an own exhibition. They spent the summers in Somogytúr. In 1913 they moved to Budapest. In 1924 he organised an exhibition in the National Saloon. In 1925 he was awarded the National Prize of Pastel, in 1926 he was given the Award of Genre. 78
