Although the artist was given a landowner's rank, he did not have an economic qualification and took a great responsibility in making a living on the land. He was not a typical bohemian gentry fashionable in the turn of the century. He employed a farm manager and studied special literature. There were a lot of prosperous years in agriculture. He won awards in grapes-, apple growing and fish, cattle breeding for good quality The diplomas on the walls state them. Quoting Kunffy: „In the summer of 1905 I had to cope with the farming and the constructions as well. I built a nice stable, a cart shed and a locksmith -and cartwright workshop together with a ver pretty veranda in front of our house. I tried to design it proportionally. Also I had the water pipe introduced with a bathroom for a comfortable way of life. I planted a lot of trees and employed the horticulturist of the Lengyeltóti estate to arrange the garden. The nearest bathing place to us was Balatonlelle, a thriving settlement, it was a nice place to ride at in our carriage. Bosnyák Zoltán, a min. councellor would visit us, he was interested in Somogytúr being born there. This land was bought from his family by my grandfather. They had to sell the estate having so many heirs in the family. Géza 's brother farmed in Misefa in Zala county. While in Lelle, where Zoltán had a villa, I paid them a visit, he introduced me to his family. His mother, an educated, high-spirited woman also had a cottage there. Géza 's wife, Jolán Somssich, a vivid beauty, of whom I cold take a pastel picture while visiting us in Somogy túr. Even came to see us in Paris having a great friendship between the families' '. In 1910 there were important developments in farming. „/ remember having to hurry home due to farm cases: Because this year I established a 20-hold vineyard, employing the vinoculturist Nits from Szekszárd. He helped me to find the right area, with proper sandy soil immune from phylloxera. The land was chosen so as the afternoon sun could shine at it improving the quality of the wine, and successfully I could produce the best wine of the area. This year we completed the fishponds, with the help of labourers from the Alföld. Then there were a lot offish made in the country proving a very profitable business. My brother, Charles established great fish ponds in the Odeschalchi estate in Rome, at Susek making me feel like forming the 20 hold-large pond here, in the Somogy túr valley, enhancing the landscape. The fish was fed with barley and fish powder, making it very tasty and our carp became a brand at the fish hall in Budapest. This time the fish traders from Budapest shipped Hungarian fish alive in huge tanks to Berlin. I go the idea of wine making from provost Ágoston Fekete, who I had met in Fácánkert. " 73
