mation concerning their manufacture. The results of the material tests (X-ray diffraction method) showed that imported pigments (Egyptian blue, appianum) as well as local materials (dolomite, black earth) were used. Járó M.: Roman Pigments of Similar Type from an Excavated Pannonian Building. An attempt at differentiation on the basis of analytical data = in: Recent Advances in the Conservation and Analysis of Artefacts, Summer Schools Press, London, 1987. pp. 285-288. Routine investigation of the pigments of mural paintings from the Roman period generally yield a small number of pigment types. With the joint application of several analytical techniques (X-ray diffraction, optical emission spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence) it was possible to distinguish the pigments of similar type from a multi-period painted Roman villa. Based on the determination of additives and trace elements, the seven red and six green samples analysed could be grouped into 5 and 6 units respectively. Such an accurate characterization of the pigments, coupled with the data obtained from analysis of the levelling plaster, can help in separating the fragments recovered during excavation and in the elaboration of a relative chronology of the painted layers. Textiles, dyes Tímár—Balázsy Á.: Untersuchung von Farbstoffen historischer Textilien = Proceedings of the 3rd International Restorer Seminar, 1982, Budapest, pp. 141—143. A survey of dyes important in determining the age of historical textiles is given. (In Hungarian) The authors give a survey on the traditional dyes used for textile dyeing in Hungarian folk-art. On the basis of old receipes a huge range of colours was produced by the dyeing of wool with the collected 74 typical Hungarian dyeing plants. Conclusions on the dyeing method were drawn.
