As a result of the consecutive hospital directors’ efficient cooperation, the hospital extended its limits to the end of the mentioned era: by 1970, there were 52 beds instead of 16; the annual number of patients increased from 45-50 to 869. Ferdinánd Wehle’s (director: 1855-60) and his successor János Töltényi's (director: 1861-70) mutual success is that they had the governance of the Counties of the Kingdom accept the alteration of the hospital’s operational form: the foundational hospital has become an open public hospital for the county by 1859. This appropriate decision founded the further development and maintained its progression. Upon covering the initial era of the history of the hospital, we get to know the yet unexplored, hard and struggling years of the prison hospital that had been operating 50 years earlier (from 1789) before the actual foundational hospital. The presented documents testify the continuous and persistent struggle of the doctors who tried everything to improve the inhuman conditions of the convicts. We can read about the provisions regarding the health care of the inmates within the prison system established in 1834. The significance of the prison hospital started to gradually decrease as the role of the open public hospital started to become determinant. In the appendix, there are more documents held important by the author on the financing, operational code of the hospital.
