394 DUNÁNTÚLI DOLGOZATOK (A) TERMÉSZETTUDOMÁNYI SOROZAT 10. (2000) Nesting birds (Aves) in the Villány Hills, South Hungary László BANK This paper is on the breeding bird fauna analysis of the Villány Hills (Baranya, Hungary). 89 nesting bird species were registered during the 1983-2000 survey period. Of this number 71 belongs to the protected whereas 9 to the strictly protected category (Ciconia nigra, Ciconia ciconia, Circaetus gallicus., Crex crex Tyto alba, Athene noctua, Merops apiaster, Monticola saxatilis, Emberiza hortulana). 4 species of the strictly protected ones (Circaetus gallicus, Crex crex, Monticola saxatilis, Emberiza hortulana) are now occasional breeders. It is difficult to find any explanation for their disappearance because of the relative stability of the habitat. 40.5-44.5% of the Hungarian breeding bird species can be found in this area. The presence of songbirds (Passeriformes) is dominant (65.2%). Both arboreal and open area species occured. Author's address: László BANK MME/BirdLife Hungary H-7621 Pécs, Felsőmalom u. 22
