Dunántúli Dolg. Term. Tud. Sorozat 10 199-214 Pécs, 2000 Data to 64 beetle families (Coleoptera) from the Villány Hills, South Hungary Ottó MERKL & Sándor HORVATOVICH MERKL, O. & HORVATOVICH, S.: Data to 64 beetle families (Coleoptera) from the Villány Hills, South Hungary Abstract. 362 species belonging to 64 beetle families are listed from the Villány Hills, South Hungary. Pytho depressus (Linnaeus, 1767) (Pythidae) is new to the fauna of Hungary. With seven figures. Introduction The Villány Hills is an isolated limestone mass in the southernmost part of Hungary, near the Croatian border. Based on botanical evidence it is considered part of the Praeillyricum, where the Mediterranean influence is the most expressed in Hungary. This paper is devoted to listing 362 species belonging to 64 families of Coleoptera. About 70 percent of the material investigated was collected in eleven localities (Fig. 1) in the period of 1998-2000 by the staff members of the Janus Pannonius Museum (S. Horvatovich, J. Sár, Á. Uherkovich) and the warden of the nature reserve (Gy. Dudás). The remaining 30 percent comes from the earlier collectings in the area investigated. The bulk of this material is deposited in the Janus Pannonius Museum, and a few specimens are housed in the Hungarian Natural History Museum (Budapest). In the List of species, only the localities are mentioned for almost all species. For some remarkable species, the locality, the date of collecting and the name of collector(s) are given. Classification Classification and Sequence of the families are according to LAWRENCE & NEWTON (1995), with the exception of Scaphidiidae. This is at present a subfamiliy of the Staphylinidae, but is treated here as distinct family from practical reasons. The families mentioned in the List of species belong to the following suborders and superfamilies: Suborder ADEPHAGA: Dytiscidae, Noteridae. Suborder POLYPHAGA Superfamily Hydrophiloidea: Hydrophilidae, Histeridae. Superfamily Staphylinoidea: Hydraenidae, Agyrtidae, Leiodidae, Silphidae, Scaphidiidae. Superfamily Buprestoidea: Buprestidae. Superfamily Byrrhoidea: Byrrhidae, Dryopidae, Limnichidae, Heteroceridae. Superfamily Elateroidea: Elateridae, Eucnemidae, Throscidae, Drilidae, Lampyridae, Cantharidae.
