488 DUNÁNTÚLI DOLGOZATOK (A) TERMÉSZETTUDOMÁNYI SOROZAT 9. (1998) Investigations of the small mammal fauna of the river Dráva lowland region, based on barn owl (Туto alba) pellet analysis between 1995-1997 Győző HORVÁTH The monitoring programme consisting of the monthly collection of barn owl pellets primarily in the region of the county Baranya section of river Dráva was started in the end of 1995. For the faunistic evaluation of the material collected during the first two years of the programme, the samples obtained from the 20 villages situated closest to river Dráva were processed. The analysis concerned the lower section of the river in county Somogy and its entire section in county Baranya, involving 10 UTM-squares of 10 km by 10 km. The 61 samples contained 2176 pellets and cast fragments out of which 7952 small mammal specimens were identified. Four genera within the order of Insectivora were found comprising of 6 shrew (Soricidae) species, while as for the rodents (Rodentia), 12 species plus another genus (without differentiation between its species) were identified. The whole owl pellet material consisted of a total of 2238 specimens of Insectivora and 5714 specimens of Rodentia. The ranking of the most frequent genera is as follows: Mi его tus, Crocidura, Apodemus, Sor ex. Out of the 17 collection sites the samples from 6 of them produced a Shannon diversity value greater than 2,0. These collection localities lay closest to river Dráva. The village with the highest diversity value was Piskó, where the proportion of Soricidae species was the highest.
