The vertebrates of Béda-Karapancsa landscape protection area, South Hungary. József MAJER The vertebrate fauna of Béda-Karapancsa landscape protection area was investigated. The area is situated in the Southern part of Hungary as a wetland along the Danube river. There are a reach breeding and migratory area of the bird communities. It is one of the most important natural wetland area of Hungary, there have been 21 (among them 2 protected) fishes, 12 amphibians, 8 reptiles, 113 bird species registered in the sanctuary during the last 3 year. The breeding white tailed eagles (Haliaëtus albicilla), black storks (Ciconia nigra) and sackers (Falco cherrug) were the most important species among the birds. The small mammals were identified from owls pellets. 6 insectivora and 12 rodentia species were determined from 872 pellets. Among the middle size mammals the most important were the otters (Lutra luira). The investigation of the fauna of this wetland has not finished yet. Systematic research work required to obtain more details from the fauna of this area.
