MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 2 (1) Winged forms, males. Inner side of metacoxa with carina. Head, mesosoma, legs, metasomal seg­ments 3-7 and sternite 2 black, metasomal segments 1 and 2 rusty brown. Head underneath, sides of mesosoma and legs chestnut brown. Antennae black with reddish brown shade. Whole body and legs with sparse pale setae. Setae on frons, mesonotum, tegulae, scutellum and tergites black. Tergites with band of sparse, pale setae. Vertex and mesosoma with sparse erect black setae, ventral parts of head, legs and sternites with sparse pale setae forming weak band on posterior margin of sternites. Setae on tergite 6 yellowish. Wings quite dark, veins brown. 10-15 mm. [Platymyrmilla quinquefasciata (OLIVIER, 1811)] 3rd subfamily: Mutillinae LATREILLE, 1802 Females eye rounded elliptical, without setae. Sides of mesosoma curved but not wider than propodeum. Metasomal tergite 2 with felt lines. Pygidium usually well developed. Males with inner border of eyes more or less deeply excised, excision nearer to upper margin of eye than to lower margin. Eyes without setae. Tegula large, reaching or sur­passing suture between scutellum and mesonotum. Radial vein present. Felt lines usu­ally present on tergite 2, occasionally also on sternite 2 in a reduced form. Apex of gonostylus strongly bending upward. 3.1st tribe: Mutillini LATREILLE, 1802 Female mesosoma with spots or bands of pale setae on tergites. No scutellar scale. Ocelli of males small, diameter of anterior ocellus smaller than distance between it and posterior ocelli. Mandible without protrusion on outer side (except Mutilla quinquemac­ulata). Pterostigma transparent. Tegulae are long, reaching beyond suture between scutellum and mesonotum. Felt lines present on metasomal tergite 2. Mutilla LINNAEUS, 1758 Female with robust rectangular parallel-sided mesosoma and metasoma having diverse patterns of bands and spots of pale setae. Head rounded, usually wider than mesosoma. Flagellomere 1 about 1.5-2.Ox longer than 2. Metasomal segment 1 articulating in full width with metasomal segment 2. Tergite 6 usually covered by pale setae. Pygidium absent. Male ocelli small. Mandible significantly widening toward apex. Flagellomere 2 almost half as long as 3. Metacoxa with carina on inner side, sternite 1 with medial lon­gitudinal carina. Wings are more or less dark. Pterostigma large. Metasoma black with bluish or violet metallic lustre. The genus includes 3 species in Europe. Two occur in Hungary. The largest velvet ants occurring in Hungary belong to this genus.
