MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 parent. Felt line present on tergite 2, much shorter on sternite 2. Sternites 1 and 2 often with medial longitudinal carina. BAJÁRI (1954) mentioned Myrmilla (Pseudomutilla) capitata (LUCAS, 1849) to occur in Hungary, based on a specimen from Kiskunfélegyháza. However, thuis specimen is a misidentified Myrmilla glabrata. The species is thus unknown from Hungary. Myrmilla WESMAEL, 1851 Head large, rectangular, wider than long, and about 1.4-1.6x wider than mesosoma in both sexes. Female head weakly convex underneath, with rounded edge. Flagellomere 1 is at least twice as long as 2 (Fig. 63). Mesosoma reddish brown, metasoma usually black. Metasomal sternite 1 with tooth-like process, sometimes very small. Posterior part of metasomal segments 1 and 2 with bands of pale pubescence, metasomal segment 3 covered entirely by pale pubescence. Males with flagellomere 1 as long as 2, or a little shorter. Forewing with 2 cellula cubitalis and 1 or 2 cellula discoidalis. Males of subgenus Pseudomutilla apterous. In subgenus Myrmilla, gonostylus slightly longer than volsella. In subgenus Pseudomutilla, gonostylus either shorter than or as long as volsella. The genus includes 16 species in Europe. Six occurs in Hungary. 1 (13) Apterous forms. 2 (3) Males: antennae with 13 antennnomeres, mesosomal segments not fused, sutures between them clearly visible. Head about 1.5x wider than pronotum. Anterior part of clypeus with two long and thin teeth pointing forward (frequently broken off on dry specimens). Mandibles weakly widening toward apex, tridentate, inner tooth wide, flat and truncate (Fig. 93). Head, antennae and metasoma black, legs dark chestnut brown, tarsi lighter. Mandibles and mesosoma yellowish red, sides of mesosoma usually somewhat lighter. Vertex with sparsely, erect, black setae; undersides of head and metasoma, and legs with sparse pale setae; upper parts of mesosoma with sparse, erect brown setae; metasomal tergites 1-5 with band of pale setae, somewhat elongate forward in middle of tergites 2-5 (Fig. 159). 4-7 mm. It is a Mediterranean species, which is considered rare (Fig. 4). Specimens were collected mainly in the neighbourhood of Budapest as well as a few localities of the Great Hungarian Plain and around the Lake Velence. It occurs in both sandy and heavy soils, but more abundant in sandy areas. The first male specimens in Hungary were found in 1995 by J. Muskovits. Known period of collection: 4. VI-14. IX. Distribution: Austria, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Syria. Myrmilla (Pseudomutilla ) glabrata (FABRICIUS, 1775) 3 (2) Females: antennae with 12 antennomeres, mesosomal segments fused, sutures absent. 4 (7) Head behind antennal base black or dark brown (usually head completely black).
