Sawfly collections in and around the Carpathian Basin

The Hymenoptera collection (including Symphyta) was established by Victoria Iuga-Raica and Xenia Scobiola-Palade after the World War II by aquisiting the Eugen Worell collection. Nagyszeben (Sibiu), Brukenthal Museum, Natural History The sawfly collection of the Brukenthal Museum was organized by the members of the Transylvanian Society of Natural Sciences (Sieb enbür gis eher Verein für Naturwissenschaften: Muller, Henrich, Worell, Deubel, Kimakovicz, etc). In total 2,766 specimens of 312 sawfly species are deposited in the museum which were collected by the members of the Society since 1894. The collection was published by Mariana Pascu and Xenia Scobiola-Palade. Museul de Stinte Naturale Piatra Neamt The museum was founded in 1965. Vasile Ionescu established the entomological collection by the donation of his private insect collection including 3,000 Symphyta specimens. PODOLEANU (1977, 1979) and IONESCU (1974) studied the museum collection. Bacau, "Ion Borcea " Natural Sciences Museum Complex The Hymenoptera collection was founded in 1978. There are 500 sawfly specimens of 55 species identified by Xenia Scobiola-Palade. Ukraine Lviv, State Museum of Natural History The former Dzieduszycki Museum founded by count Wlodzimierz Dzieduszycki Polish landowner and scientist in 1855. The sawfly collection contains about 1,500 specimens mainly from Galicia. They were collected before the World War II., during the first three decades of the 20 th century. There are no type specimens deposited in the Symphyta collection. Published output: NOWICKI, M. 1865: Insecta Haliciae Musei Dzieduszyckiani Krakow, Universitatis Jagellonicae. Kiev, Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology preserves entomological collection of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. Despite V. Ermolenko was employed by the institute, there are hardly any mounted and identified sawfly specimens (except Cephidae). The Ermolenko collection is deposited between cotton-layers. The Symphyta type collection contains 19 holotypes and 1 paratype of V. Ermolenko described from Russia, Azerbaidzhan, Ukraine and Mongolia. Poland Krakow, Museum of Natural History and Institute ofSystemati.es and Evolution of Animals, Polish Academy of Sciences The Institute was founded in 1865, as the Physiographic Commission by the Krakow Scientific Society. The Natural History Museum is an integrant part of the Institute, was founded at the same time under the original name of Physiographic Museum. The sawfly collection is placed in 30 boxes that count approximately 7,000 specimens. It comprises mostly historical specimens from Galicia collected by Wierzejski, Stobiecki, Fudakowski, Nowicki, Niezabitowski and in smaller part by Dylewska.
