338 NATURA SOMOGYIENSIS New occurrence of the European beaver {Castor fiber) in Somogy county JÓZSEF LANSZKI & GYŐZŐ HORVÁTH The occurrence of European beaver {Castor fiber) along the Drava river in Somogy county (between Őrtilos-Szentmihályhegy and Babócsa), in the Danube-Drava National Park, Hungary was monitored by searching direct marks between 2000 and 2006. Beaver presence was only proven in one point by finding chewing marks and footprints along watersmeet of Drava and Mura rivers. Occurrence of beavers was aperiodic, supposedly due to high and erratic fluctuation in water-levels, and due to the gravelly river bank. Spontaneous occurrence shows potential suitability for beavers in the environment of Mura river.
