40 NATURA SOMOGYIENSIS Mollusc fauna of Somogy county (Mollusca) ZOLTÁN HÉRA & ANDRÁS VARGA From zoogeographical and faunistical point of view, the distribution data published so far on the molluscs of Somogy county are not satisfactory, considering that the area is extended and rich in habitats of various kinds. Although the fresh water fauna makes up more than one third of the 158 recorded species, there is considerably a small number of publications on the subject. Due to the lack of the systematic researches, our knowledge about the composition and the changes of the river water fauna is especially unsatisfactory, however, these molluscs obviously play an important role in the water ecosystem. From nature conservation point of view, the Ortilosi hills seem to be the most valuable, where several interesting snail species live together. From these species, Pomatias elegáns (Müller, 1774) and Ena montana (Draparnaud, 1801) are under protection. The already protected Helix pomatia (Linnaeus, 1758), became rare in some places but it still occurs countywide. There are no recent reports on the occurrence of two also protected species, Theodoxus danubialis (C. Pfeiffer, 1828) and Theodoxus transversalis (C. Pfeiffer, 1828).
