MÁRTON RÓZSÁS THE PLACES OF CIVIL CULTURE IN BARCS FROM THE MIDDLE OF 19TH CENTURY TO THE END OF WORLD WAR II (PART 1) SUMMARY The author wants to give a glimpse into the cultural relationship between (1871-1944) of the previously prospering market-town (1797-1871) Bares, it became an average settlement during the 19. century. It became obvious after the analysis of data that local cultural institutions and civil associations could only be established after the settlement of 1867, after the relationship with Habsburgs became normal. Ten starter of club life and the most active mover of it was the upper and middle class citizens who needed and could afford this kind of activity. The settlement became a city only in 1979, the most active and dinamic period was 1871-1914. In this period lots of associations were founded, which determined the habits and opportunities of civil social life. It is an important local historiescultural fact that the first permanent theatre in Somogy country opened in 1909. The decline of cultural institutions started after I. world war. Among the reasons we can list the shock after the war, the economic regression. The period between the two world war some of the cultural institutions opened again, but it never regained its original activity. After 1945 the civil institutions were closed by order.
