Dr. Nagy János: Korai szentendrei művek (Egy magángyűjtő tapasztalatai)

His partner, Annuska used to say joking that according to the master no "good picture" had ever got out of that studio. Mostly he painted town and landscapes but he often made portraits as well. This is what he was living on between the tow world wars: he produced the portraits of several public figures. László Rozgonyi was a most sensitive character, he only painted almost for himself — told his window, Aunt Irénke, when we were talking. Even in the recent years the wife, Irén Érchegyi always told about her husband departed much too early, with deep emotion. In her words, he was an inhibited character in spite of being fairly good-looking. I am fond of his selfportraits, for example the Self-Portrait in Black Hat, which is one of his most important works. In my opinion his self-portraits suggest sorrow from the depths of his soul. My favourite painter of the eight artists, whose art I love the best, is Béla Onódi. He was the artist who became almost inseparable from the town from 1926 on. After coming and settling in Szentendre he never left the town till his death in 1991. He made the most views and drawings of Szentendre and its surroundings. Onódi was all over the world, spent several years in North America, and worked in Barbizon as well. His ideals were László Paál and Millet, whose art he admired till his death. In his last year I took him to the Hungarian National Gallery as he wished to take dleights in the sight of László PaáPs works. Even at an older age he liked travelling; as a tourist he was in Turkey, and from the Dalmatian coast through Europe he got to Spain as well. During his journeys he had enough energy to make a few oil paintings and graphic sketches. My never-ceasing sorrow — and I am not alone with it — is that the most beautiful works of the artists having lived and created in Szentendre cannot be seen at a permanent exhibition. I think it would advance the artistic rank of Szentendre, and, at the same time, it could give satisfaction to the memory of the founder members. 94
