ROZÁLIA FARKAS THE HISTORY OF THE INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY OF SZENTENDRE SUMMARY The author follows the history of the Industrial Society of Szentendre from its foundation in 1892 to 1949 when it was dissolved. In the introduction she outlines the period before the foundation of such societies, namely the formation of guilds and their activities. She relates 19th century decrees and acts which restricted the authorizations of the quilds and thus led to their cessation and contributed to the formation of industrial societies, namely the Provisional Orders of 1851, the Imperial Open Order of 1859, Act VIII of 1872 and Act XVII of 1884 or the Second Industrial Act, which was the legal basis for the foundation of the Industrial Society of Szentendre as well. She publishes the basic rules of the Industrial Society of Szentendre and then she relates how the society could perform the tasks it was given by the above document in the more then fifty years it functioned. She surveys the structure, the leadership, the changes in the membership, the financial situation of the society as well as its problems in finding an appropriate office which lasted for decades. She enumerates archival data of how serious efforts the society made in order to defend the interests of its members and to supply local inhabitants with the demanded products and services. She gives a detailed description of two cardinal activities: the training of apprentices and the struggle against unqualified craftsmen. In 1938 the Industrial Society of Szentendre was reorganized as the Industrial Society of Szentendre and Its Neighbourhood and thus it represented the craftsmen of Dunabogdány, Kisoroszi, Pilisszentlászló, Pócsmegyer, Szigetmonostor, Tahitótfalu and Visegrád apart from those of Szentendre until 1949 when the Minister of Industry dissolved it similarly to other societies in the country.
