century, so I have enlarged the circle of patron saints with the latter ones. The formation of such names of settlements finished by the beginning of the 16 th century. We know 36 patron saints from the Árpádian Age records of our county. At this territory in the 11 th —13 th century the greatest honour was devoted to Virgin Mary (7), St. Martin (4), St. Michael (2), St. George (2). [f we summarise the 158 patron saints mentioned in the Árpádian Age and appeared until the end of the 17 th century in records, we get the following results: Virgin Mafy 22 St. Martin 15 St. George 13 St. Michael 11 St. Nicholas 10 St. Ladislaus 9 Holy Cross 7 St. Andrew 6 King St. Stephen 5 St. Jacob, All-Saints, St. Lawrence 5 John the Baptist, (Iván 425 ) 4 St. Anna, St. Peter 3 St. John, St. Margaret, St. Denis, 2 St. Abraham, St. Blaise, St. Bartholomew, St. Demeter, St. Giles, St. Gerald, St. Martyr Stephen, St. Catherine, St. Clair, St. Cosmas, St. Lazarus, St. Eustachius, St. Mark, St. Matthias, St. Paul, St. Simon and Judas, St. Sabine, St. Salvator, St.Thomas, Holy Trinity, St. Vid, St. Sigismund, 1 Comparing the patron saints of Pest county with the database of other regions considering the frequency of patron saints, 426 we can assume that the only similar feature is the constant popularity of Virgin Mary. As a general Hungarian tendency we can see the changing of the same saints on the first 10 places: Virgin Mary, St. Martin, St. George, St. Nicholas, St. Michael, St. Peter, King St. Stephen and St. Jacob and the tituli of the Holy Cross and All-Saints. Their order is different in different regions. Among the frequent saints we can also mention St. Andrew, St. Emericus, St. Ladislaus, St. Laurence. The rest of the saints and tituli appear much more rarer, only occasionally. Byzantine patron saints - St. Demeter, St. Nicolaus, St. George, St. Kozma and Damian - appear in Pest county in 26 cases. This is the 16.56 % of the whole material. I have found warrior saints (St. Michael, St. Demeter, St. George, St. Laurence, king St. Stephen, king St. Ladislaus, prince St. Emericus) in 58 cases. They make more than one third (36.7 %) of the whole amount. Among the patrons we find saints of Hungarian origin, the most frequent are St. Stephen, St. Emericus, St. Ladislaus. Soon after the canonisation of king Stephen and prince Emericus (1083) we can suggest the appearance 425 According to Lajos Kiss, patron saint St. Iván corresponds to St. John the Baptist.
