Tari Edit: Pest megye középkori templomai (Studia Comitatensia 27. Szentendre, 2000.)
Starting from the 13 l century the number of records had suddenly increased, the grow was more than 100%. In the 14 th century this tendency was not so spectacular, but still significant. Comparing to the previous century the amount of written documents doubled. In a great number of late medieval, 15 th —18 th centuries' records originating from comitat Pest we find reference to churches which were evidently earlier than the first written mentioning of them. Most of them are of Árpádian Age origin. PARISHES IN THE PAPAL TITHE LISTS A special group of records includes the papal tithe lists. The first collectors of the papal tithes arrived to Hungary in 1275. Between 1317-1320 the pope collected the incomes of vacant benefices. In 1331 he ordered the collection of the tenth of incomes of all the prelates, prebends, abbots and parsons for the period of 6 years. In 1332-37 bishops paid tax in the amount of the tenth of their recorded income, but the parsons considered the tithe to be their income and paid tax in the amount of the tenth of tithe. In this time one tenth of the tithe belonged to the bishop, the rest - the four part - was divided between the chaplain and the local priests. Newly founded urban and privileged parishes took their part of the tithe on the basis of their agreement with the bishop. Between 1338-1342 the earlier taxes had been enlarged only by supplementing the new taxes. 422 In the papal tithe list from 1332-38, 56 places with churches are mentioned from the territory of the present Pest county. Taking into consideration the circumstances cited above I used for the table the data of the archdeaneries of Buda, Szentendre, Pest, Nógrád, Vác, Szigetfő, Hont, Szolnok and Csongrád. In the lists shown in the following we sometimes learn the amount of the declared income, sometimes the amount of the imposed taxes, and in 8 cases we have even proportions. From this we can assume, that the income tax was not unified, but the most common one seems to be a 10% tax, because we get this result in 4 cases from the 8 proportions that could be calculated. Generally it can be said that the lack of tithe lists from comitat Pest does not prove the poor inhabitation of the region in the Árpádian Age, because from the 6 years only the materials of one year had been preserved. However, it must be taken into consideration that if the Mongol Invasion caused such a horrible demolition in our county, mainly in the plain, then the list could give a true picture of the demographic conditions of the first half of the 14 th century e.g. in the territory between the Danube and Tisza. CHURCH LITHURGY Already in the 11 th century the church had to be consecrated by krisma (holy oil) in the course of dedication, after that the newly built church was purified by holy water, and the bishop had drawn with the tip of his bishop's crook the letters of the two of the three holy languages (Greek and Latin) onto the pavement of the church dusted by ash. The liturgy rich in symbols was formed at the territory of the Frankish Empire and got to our country through intermediators as well as the ceremony of cemetery consecration. In the first centuries Hungarian churches tried to follow the liturgy of Esztergom. It is evidenced by the Esztergom Benedictionale originated between 1075-1083.
