Pásztor Adrien–Vida Tivadar. Bizánci éremleletes sír a budakalászi avar temetőből

different degree and formed a new style, the birthplace of which must had been in the territory of former Pannónia. Here we do not have the task of deeper examination of this style formed from many components, determination of certain directions and their separation. But we think that by the determination of the ring from Budakalász and its circle we could give new data to the further research of the question. Fortunately in the present case we can add a chronological data to our information. The grave from Budakalász can be dated by the golden solidus of emperor Herakleios and his son. The coin was minted in Constantinople between 616—625. Taking into consideration that it was found in mint condition, it could get into earth between 610—620. On this basis we can date finds from the grave together with the circle mentioned above, to the last decades of the 6th — first decades ot the 7th century. All these facts suit well into the chronology of the animal style beyond the Carpathian Basin 26 and the chronology of its cogged variant inside the Carpathian Basin (Budapest-Farkasrét, Kunmadaras, Jankovich grave) 27 . Besides it, these aspects support with concrete data — in this case on the basis of the Fenékpuszta-Horreum analogy — chronological ideas (born 20 years ago) about the ralating find material of "Keszthely culture" 28 . Notes 1. Rescue excavations were conducted on this findspot in 1954 by Sándor Soproni. In 1959 István Erdélyi excavated 30 graves. More about it: István Erdélyi: Das awarische Gräberfeld in BudakalászDunapart (Donaunter). MittArchlnst 7, 1977,45—54. In 1972 Sarolta Tettamanti identified 4 graves, then in 1987 she excavated 79 graves. Tettamanti Sarolta: RégFüz 41, 1988,49. Since 1988 rescue excavations have been conducted by the authors. Preliminary report: Pásztor Adrien—Vida Tivadar: Leletmentés Budakalászon (Rescue excavations in Budakalász). Élet és Tudomány 5,1990,144—146. 2. We thank Professor István Bona and Professor Wolfgang Hahn for their assistance in determination of the coin. 6. With the question of Byzantine gold mints from Avar Age, the problem of light solidi marked BOXX—OBXX dealt in details István Bona. István Bona: Studien zum frühawarischen Reitergrab von Szegvár. Acta ArcHung 32, 1980, 31—36. Bona István: Avarok. In: Magyarország története I. Budapest 1984., 384. The question was later examined also by Hahn 1981, 88. 7. In his reading opinion István Bona considered our determination to be likely, but did not exclude the opportunity that the silver plate could be the fragment of an earring with a big spherical pendant composited from two parts. This question can not be solved definitely on the basis of the damaged semispherical fragment, so we have to keep the above opportunity open. 14. Fettich 1926, T: 1/4, 11, 16, T: 11/19. A good analysis drawing — László Gyula: Budapest a népvándorláskorban. In: Budapest története. 1942., 788. T. CXXXVI. Some data on the history of the find, recently: Bona 1982—83. 119—120. and Nagy 1988. 373—375. Translated by Valeria Kulcsár 247
