BIOGRAPHY Zalaegerszeg, August 6, 1908 - Budapest, September 7, 1941 1915-1922 Lives together with his family in Belgrade and Valjevo (Serbia), where he starts his studies in German and Serbian. 1923 Settles together with his family in Szentendre. They live at 4 Dumtsa Jenő Street. His two brothers remain in Serbia. This year, he starts his regular art studies in the drawing course of National Hungarian Israelite Cultural Association under Lipót Herman - among others. 1926 Because of his tuberculous osteitis, he is operated on several times. 1927 His mother dies. 1927-1929 Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest as a student of István Csók. The fresh attitude of the exhibition of students in 1928 in Kunsthalle, Budapest, arouses the attack of conservative art circles. As a consequence, those working in a modern spirit - among them Dezső Korniss, Sándor Trauner, György Kepes and Lajos Vajda - are expelled from the Academy in 1929. 1928 Participates in the exhibition of the youth of the New Society of Artists in the National Salon 1929-1930 Partakes in the reciting circle and choir of Work-circle led by Lajos Kassák. 1929 Takes part in the exhibition of New Progressive Artists in Tamás Gallery. 1930 From autumn until spring 1934, he lives in Paris. 1934 Studies directed by János Vaszary at the private school of Klára Rázsó. He is acquainted with Endre Bálint. 1935 Works together with Dezső Korniss in Szentendre and Szigetmonostor. He gets acquainted with his later wife, Júlia Richter from Pozsony. Their correspondence lasting to their marriage is an important document of his artistic views. 1936-1940 Spends the summers in Szentendre. Several young painters of his acquaintances - among them Endre Bálint, Piroska Szántó, Margit Anna, Imre Ámos - spend some time in the town during the summers. The local artists' community refers to them as "the tousled". 1937 Has the first studio exhibition with the Ámos-Anna couple. 1937-1938 and 1939-1940 Makes phase drawings for trick films during the winter so as to cover the cost of his living. 1940 Has the second studio exhibition at Gusztáv Seiden photographer's flat. He is called up for labour service but sent home for his tuberculosis. 1941 The disease overcomes his body. 16
