ROMAN AGE (8th/7th century ВС- late 1 st century ÁD) Л Sarmatian settlement at Gödöllő (400-454 AD)(454-568 AD) (568-81 1/829 AD) (1301-1526/1686) (1st-4th centuries AD) Remains of a Sarmatian settlement were found along Dózsa György Road running across the hill overlooking the Rákos Stream on the outskirts of Gödöllő, in an area known as Szilháti-dűlő, during the excavation conducted by Klára Kővári preceding the construction of the TESCO supermarket in 2003. The terra sigillata finds date the settlement’s investigated portion to the earlier and mid-3rd century. Altogether 141 archaeological features were uncovered in the 21,559 m2 large investigated area. Most of these were storage and refuse pits, alongside ditches for draining excess water and ditches marking the boundaries of the homesteads. The remains of five buildings, an oven and a grave were also excavated. One of the sunken buildings measuring 3 m by 3.5 m probably functioned as a house, whose roof was supported by four posts set in the post-holes in the corners. There was a small oven or a fire-place encircled by stones in the eastern corner. One noteworthy feature of this Sarmatian settlement was the sunken part of a smoking or drying shed. It is unclear whether the unusually well preserved oven dates from the Sarmatian or the Migration period. One remarkable find from the settlement is a tin or lead pendant with an unusual form and decoration. Two lovely, wheel-turned grey jugs made from finely levigated clay bear witness to the skills of Sarmatian potters. Klára Kővári and Valéria Kulcsár 1. Tin pendant 2. Sarmatian jug 3.
