The settlement’s third occupation level 3. Pottery vessels from various occupation periods Kakucs lies at the intersection of the plainland, which evolved from the one-time floodplain of the Danube, and the predominantly sand-covered, gently undulating table-land known as the Kiskunság in the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. Countless channels and marshland areas indicate the one-time course of the palaeo-Danube. Many Bronze Age settlement remains have been identified on the sandy ridges rising above the formerly waterlogged marshland flanking these palaeo-channels. The Balia Hill rises to a height of 5-6 meters in the south-western part of Kakucs. The oval mound with a diameter of 125 meters lies adjacent to the similarly high, but more extensive Szélmalom Hill, measuring 250 meters by 250 meters, which gradually grades into the surrounding land. The two mounds were probably part of the same settlement and it seems likely that a third mound, □ebner Hill on the opposite side of Fő Road in Kakucs had also been part of this settlement. The possible remains of fortifications, ramparts and ditches could no longer be identified around and between the mounds. The central plateau and northern slope of Balia Hill were investigated in 1992-1993. The deposits of five superimposed occupation levels accumulating to a thickness of 1.5 meters were uncovered in the 120 m1 2 3 large investigated area. The finds suggest that the settlement was occupied from the late Nagyrév/early Vatya period to the late Vatya/Koszider period. The houses with plastered floor yielded countless artefacts, although the majority of the finds was recovered from storage and refuse pits. In addition to a rich inventory of pottery wares and other household artefacts, large quantities of animal bones were also brought to light together with a few bronze articles and a gold lock ring. • Gabriella Kulcsára К ,.
