Választott témái között felismerhetőek szülőhelyének rusztikus tájai, a kopár, sziklás vidék szeretete. / Az Ornans-i sziklák méltó módon reprezentálja a zárt téralkotással jellemezhető courbet-i tájtípust. A terméketlen talajban néhány fa hajladozik a sziklák alatt folyó patak mentén. A kompozíció felső szakaszában egy kis település áttételesen idézi fel az ember jelenlétét. A realista tájkép eszményítés nélküli képe tárul itt elénk, az objektív, látványhű tájszemlélet tipikus példája. A kép Courbet jellegzetes festésmódját is reprezentálja, kötődését a rembrandt-i realista festészet hagyományaihoz, a sötét színskálához és a plasztikus fényárnyék ellentétekhez. Parmi les thèmes qu'il choisit on reconnaît les paysages rustiques de son pays natal, son amour pour les campagnes nues et rocheuses. / Les Rochers d'Ornans représente sur un mode noble le paysage typique de Courbet se caractérisant par la création d'un lieu clos. Quelques arbres plient sur un sol ingrat le long du ruisseau qui coule sous les rochers. Dans la partie supérieure de la composition, un petit village renvoie indirectement à la présence de l'homme. Le tableau du paysage réaliste sans idéalisation s'offre à nous, exemple typique d'une conception du paysage objective et fidèle à la réalité. Le tableau représente aussi l'un des modes de peinture caractéristiques de Courbet, l'attachement à la tradition picturale réaliste de Rembrandt, à la gamme des couleurs sombres et aux oppositions plastiques du clair-obscur. Among his chosen subjects we can recognise the rustic scenery of his birthplace, the love of the barren, rocky terrain. / The Rocks at Omans faithfully represent the Courbetian landscape, which can be typified by the creation of closed space. A few trees rooted in the infertile soil are swaying by the stream running under the rocks. In the upper section of the painting, a small settlement indirectly brings to mind the presence of humans. What we see is the realistic, not idealised landscape, a typical example of an objective view of landscape true to what the painter must have really seen. The painting also represents Courbet's typical method of painting, his attachment to the traditions of the Rembrandtian realistic painting style, the use of dark colours and the tangible contrasts of light and shade.
