Hann Ferenc - The artist's career: an overview

the years inTransylvania {Szilágyság landscape, 1993; Afternoon on the Hargita, 2001 ) and the ones that are distant from even referential representation, were made by the same person. The principal work of the period of over a decade in Germany is, in all likeli­hood, the series called D'43, which commemorates the thousands of Hungarian soldiers who died at the river Don, in 1943. It refers not only to the soldiers them­selves but also to the destiny of any human being surrendered to war by political power and had nothing to do with this drama apart from dying senselessly. Some of the large (70x100 cm) lnd : a ink drawings recall Henri Michaux 's stick­like human figures flirting with early tachism, but on the most important ones we see crosses (death signs) emerging from behind strong gestures. On these sheets, the shocking, dramatic effect is engendered by the simultaneous presence of di­rect event marking forms (crosses) and the concealing and uncovering criss-cross gesture drawing (in Germany, this method of painting is called heftige maierei), which can be interpreted as the artist's personal 'signature'. At this point, I return to Paulovics' relation to twentieth-century art trends. On the sheets of D'43, gesture is of significant importance. However, while gesture is the object of the work for other artists, it is 'merely'an instrument for Paulovics, an instrument of personalizing reality. One should find closer parallels ; n the oeuvres of Arnulf Rainer and András Baranyai, where, behind the mysteriousness, the covering and hiding, there is a personal presence (in our case, it is the presence of the artist himself), which means that reality and sign confront us with problems, ask us questions; what else would be the task of an artist at the turn of the millennium?
