Yet, the really great challenge was the following - and this problem had been thoroughly and deeply thought over by Károly Pulszky, Ödön Lechner, Károly Kós, Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch and by many others -, is it possible to do great art on the basis of all these? Is it possible to create the synthesis of the so much ramifying home-industrial purposes and practices for the attainment of a greater and more complex objective? Cecília ORI-NAGYart historian, Municipal Museum of Gödöllő FOLK ART IN THE ART COLONY OF GÖDÖLLŐ The masters of the art colony of Gödöllő founded in 1901 have created a lot of works of art that were inspired by Hungarian folk art. They all are in line with the general tendencies in the European art as a whole. Elements of folkloric decorative art are used on objects designed by them, they take part in collecting work related to ethnography and folk art objects are present in their everyday life, in their wear and also in their habitation environment. The folk art motifs, rural life in general and the utensils used by the villagers appear in their creations not only as precise or stylised representation but also in relationship with their turn of mind, life philosophy, social sensibility, their artistic creed and their teaching and educational principles. This article analyses in what manner this deliberately declared program appears in the art design activities of the Gödöllő art colony: On the tapestry produced by the weaving school in Gödöllő, on the glass paintings prepared by the masters of the art colony, in their wall decorating art and in their activity related to ethnographic collection work as well as in the fine art creations.
