Folk Art as Reflected in the Art at the Turn of the 19,h and 20th Centuries and in the Art Colony of Gödöllő. Abstracts in English / Angol nyelvű összefoglalók

210 Abstracts in English 210 about the Hungarian genre of peasant life and the trend lasting from the middle till the end of the nineteenth century is not clear enough. Based on this fact, it is justified to raise the following question: What further ways were open for the artists to renew the popular peasant life genre picture around the turn of the century? The first answer is the art colony of Szolnok emerging as thematic innovator in the genre. The second answer is the so called "fine naturalism" of Károly Ferenczi whose formal innovations were important. The art historian Károly Lyka found that it was the painter János Tornyai of peasant origin who had the archaic artistic instinct required for the revival of the dramatic peasant life genre. The fourth answer to the question formulated above was the art colony of Gödöllő where folklore appears as a fecundating source. The members of this colony wore peasant clothes and they believed in the unity of life and art. The peasant life genre picture appears also in the fine and applied art creations made by the members of the art colony. A gradual tendency to become more and more stylised can be felt in the approach of their works, starting from the academic representation, and arriving as far as secessionist delineation. It was Mariska Undi, a member of the colony who had the strongest endeavour among the colony members to represent in a peasant life genre-like manner the rural life considered as ideal. An enormous stockpile of sketches made for peasant life genre pictures by artist members of the colony has come down to us. These sketches inspired the colony members in their artistic work and motivated them in rendering life richer and nobler. Because of the mentioned gradual stylisation, their art in the field of peasant life genre is on the borderline of this genre, since the traditional peasant life genre penetrates with certain of its elements into the realm of fantasy, and even the simple peasant life genre elements will gain stylised meanings. Beatrix BASICS art historian, Budapest History Museum THE TRADITION OT GRAPHICAL TOLK WEAR SERIES IN THE 19™ CENTURY AND AT THE CENTURY TURN The opinion of the scholarly literature regarding the onset of this type of wear representation is unified: the phenomenon is known from the 16 t h century on, sparsely as individual graphical sheets and more often as pictures of a series, of an album or of a book illustration. Albums, series presenting the whole population, the ethnic groups of a country or of a region have been known in Hungary from the very beginning of the 19 t h century.
