401 Szentendrei templom | Church in Szentendre 11963 The return to Paris (1925-1939) He returned to Paris, which he had been forced to leave at the outbreak of the First World War, in 1925. He went on to stay in France, right until 1973, for varying lengths of time, now for years, now for weeks. This was where the style of his mature period crystallized, which was to characterize his painting until the very end, and was to change little, especially when compared to the frequent shifts of the first two decades. He felt at home in France, his whole character was imbued with French culture, the atmos­phere of Paris, and the impressions he gained during his summer stays in the country, especially by the sea (Fig. 30).
