Gergely Barki: Czóbel from Paris to Paris 1903-1925
125. Béla Czóbel: Village End (Neustadt an der Saale), 1922. Private collection of approximately six missing works (Plates 133-137) from reproductions. Luckily though, some masterpieces survived such as the Village with Church (Plate 126) or the Village End (Plate 125), which was painted in the vicinity of Würzburg on the border of Neustadt an der Saale. This painting was used on the cover of Ernő Kállai’s Czóbel monograph, released in 1934. Moreover, many of his water colours from the early 1920s are known to have been born during these visits to the countryside. Such is the water colour showing a distant view of the Würzburg castle with its four-cornered towers (Plate 124). Formerly believed to have been made in Szentendre, it is now in private French hands. The portrait entitled Gardener, formerly known as Village Shopkeeper (Der Dorfkrämer), was also produced here, this picture is now the property of the Párizs, Fonds National d'Art Contemporain (Plate 128).104 The painting entitled Man in Red Cap (Plate 129), held by the Czóbel Museum and up until now dated to 1926, bears stylistic techniques similar to the former work, which definitely originates from 1922. Thus, it is more likely related to this period in Germany, presumably also produced during his sojourns in Würzburg. ,ол About this painting, Mimi Kratochwill mentions that the modell was Herr Feller, the gardener (Kratochwill2001, p 30). The painting was present in Czóbel’s exhibition in the Goldschmidt-Wallerstein Gallery in 1923. Reproduced in: Wolfradt, Willi: “Bela Czobel”, Das Kunstblatt, 14 Januaryl923. On the reproduction, it is clearly visible that Czóbel originally placed his signature on the middle right. The current signature (upper right) is more recent. CZÓBEL FROM PARIS TO PARIS, 1903-1925 87
