Gergely Barki: Czóbel from Paris to Paris 1903-1925

107. Béla Czóbel: Vase on Chair, 1917 (1918). Szentendre, Ferenczy Museum In October of that year, he displayed at the Signaal Group’s exhibition in Amsterdam as well. Then, despite the conclusion of the war, he remained in Bergen and worked. At least, he was able to present work at De Branding’s fifth exhibition in Rotterdam at the end of 1918, as well as at the artist association’s exhibition organized in Utrecht at the same time. In addition, at the start of the year in February and March, he made a guest appearance with 14 works at the Hollandse Kunstenaarskring event in the Stedelijk Museum. Among the works were the portrait that he had painted of Adriaan Roland Holst and also the accompanying studies.82 In February and March of 1919, he also displayed at the exhibition of the newly-formed Orkaan Association,83 but the press took an appalling view of his works. In the months to come, at the Tenth Signaal Exhibition in Amsterdam on 5 April 1919, he presented his four freshest pieces - among them, his masterpiece The Parson of Bergen and an unfortunately unidentifiable, due to its title self-portrait (under the title La Flute et mo/). In October 1919, Czóbel moved to Berlin, but he stayed in contact with the Netherlands, both his friends and collectors there. Indeed, he took part in exhibitions - for example, the De Branding 1925-1926 Anniversary Exhibition, where he presented works together with a former colleague from The Eight, Lajos Tihanyi, who also lived in Berlin at that time.84 81 Kratochwill 2001, p 27. 82 The well-known Roland Holst portrait was displayed under the title L’homme á la cravate rose. 83 At the end of the year, he also displayed in Rotterdam with this group. 84 Amsterdam, Stelijk Museum, 12 December 1925 -1 January 1926; Rotterdam, Oude Postkantoor, 17-31 January 1926.
