Gergely Barki: Czóbel from Paris to Paris 1903-1925

81. Béla Czóbel: In the Park, 1910. Private collection (Sáránszki Art Solutions) rather, was joined to -The Eight in name alone. Andor Cserna, one of the chroniclers ofThe Eight’s 1911 exhibition, supports this view with his interesting statement: “Béla Czóbel is featured only in the title. He is in Paris, working. The news is he has more than 100 pictures that await the public’s judgement, and we will probably encounter them separately in a collective exhibition.”53 We do not know where Cserna’s information originated. No other source informs us that Czóbel had any sort of material for a large exclusive exhibition. It is sure that Béla Czóbel was not planning a single exhibition in Hungary at the time. Moreover, it is questionable whether he had more than TOO works then. We know for certain that Czóbel did not send pictures to the group’s last exhibition in 1912 either. Despite his absence, his seven companions insisted that Czóbel remains a member of the association. His name appears in The Eight’s catalogues to the very end. aa- [Cserna, Andor]: “Művészeti Revü [Review of Arts]”, Kelet Népe [People of the East], lO May 1911, 3:5-6, pp 350-352.
