Gergely Barki: Czóbel from Paris to Paris 1903-1925

57. Modigliani in 1912 58. CZÓBEL AND MODIGLIANI’S FORMER STUDIO HOUSE IN PARIS, in Cite Falguiére 59. Burgess Gelett’s photo of Czóbel in front of his Paris studio, spring In Gertrude Stein’s much-quoted reminiscences, she mentions a reclining female nude on display at the Salon des Indépendants, and on the basis of this, she declares that Czóbel is a fiercer Fauve than even Matisse.28 Not long ago, a contemporary photo came to light which preserves a reclining female nude possibly painted at that time (Plate 60). Yet, forthe time being, it is doubtful whether Ms Stein wrote about this Czóbel work in her autobiographical novel29 or a different missing work that we must continue to seek. Similarly, all of the other “wild” female nudes on display have been lost without a trace, including the one that the Hungarian poet, Endre Ady mentioned in a critique written under a pseudonym.30 28 Stein, Gertrude: The Autobiography of Alice B.
