Gergely Barki: Czóbel from Paris to Paris 1903-1925
IN PARIS AGAIN Czóbel Béla: “Levél a párizsi őszi szalonról [Letter about the Autumn Salon in Paris]”, Modern Művészet [Modern Art], November 1905, [n.p.] In the autumn of 1905, after the few inspiring months in Belgium, Czóbel returned to Paris, where he had spent a good deal of his time since 1903. Dipping into the bustling, animated world of Paris, he observed the pioneering initiatives of the great salons, as well as the modern classics in the Pellerin Collection. He visited the galleries ofVollard and other art dealers, while studying the works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne and other Neo- or Post-Impressionist artists. He showed an increasingly intense interest in the latest trends as well. In the autumn of 1905, he penned an article championing the modern sights at the Salon d’Automne, and he drew attention to the Fauves, who were debuting under Matisse’s leadership.18 Czóbel also sent his newest pictures, painted in Paris, to this exhibition. Among them was a small piece entitled Coin du Marché, probably the very same work that came to light a few years ago, entitled Market Corner (Plate 47). This is the small market 46.
