Not only the future, but the present stands before him, so much interest has he stirred up with his work in such a short time.”17 We can take it for certain that, during Czóbel’s foreign residence of 1905, at least three of his countrymen also committed to their canvases Belgian themes. Indeed, in the critical columns of homeland papers, the names Rezső Cserna and Irma Graf often appeared. They displayed their pictures painted in Belgium at exhibitions in Budapest and Paris. Still, we have no knowledge of any relationship between them and Czóbel. We only know of one artist, Andor Dobai-Székely, who painted in Czóbel’s company. Strikingly, the following summer, a host of other Hungarian painters travelled to the very same sites, including Ödön Márffy, a later member of “The Eight”. 40 CZÓBEL, A FRENCH HUNGARIAN PAINTER
