English Summaries István Molnár Medieval Szőkedencs and Its Church The village of Szőkedencs lays in the western edge of Somogy County. The remains of its Árpád Age church have been excavated in the presently used cemetery some 800 metres from the village. The village mentioned for the first time in 1329 belonged to the chapter of Buda but lay landlords also had plots at Szőkedencs. In the surroundings medieval settlement remains were discovered at a number of sites and also there was a medieval castle at the borders of the village. The Árpád Age of the latter has been demonstrated in this study. Three construction phases of the medieval church has been identified. In the Árpád Age a 10.2x7.2 metres brick church with semi-circular apse was built. From its walling little has remained, it was rather the bricks and between them stiff clay in the ground-work that was excavated. The church in its second construction phase was supplemented with a western tower, and sometime in the late medieval period it was extended by adding a sacristy to the northern part. The peculiarity of the otherwise in its size, building material and extensions typical church is given by a 700-year old tree once planted and ever since living right next to it. With the tree in the churchyard, it is a nice example of the interlocking of natural and cultural heritage. 460
