HONOURED ART-LOVING AUDIENCE! For us residing in Szentendre, the „town of the painters” it is extremely important to preserve the values of the past, to respect, transmit, and enrich the local historical traditions. The exhibition organised for commemorating the centennial birth anniversary of the female artists Margit Anna, Piroska Szántó, and Júlia Vajda who were strongly tied to our town provides a splendid opportunity to pay our tribute of respect for the art of these extraordinary women. Being aware of the important role women play in the life of the community, we have launched our new programme entitled „the town shaped to women” with the intention to create a better living environment for women in Szentendre. Within the framework of this initiative, the bronze sculpture with the title „Navigare necesse est” of the sculptress Erika Ligeti was inaugurated, and as part of the same programme a new public square in the centre was named after the paintress Mária Modok. I am delighted that in a - basically still - male-centred art world there occurs an opportunity to present the distinctive approach, the peculiar viewpoint, and the uniquely feminine artistic sensibility of female artists bound to Szentendre. They are those women who lived and performed art in an age when it was already possible for them to receive the same education as men, but there was still certain discrimination against them that they managed to overcome and even in the shadow of their husbands they were able to create everlasting artistic masterpieces. We can discover in their works of art the different tones of experiencing their own female existence and their daily problems. What kind of role they could play in a male-dominated community? Were they artists or muses? Let us find the answer together and let us admire these astonishing masterpieces! Dr. Ferenc Dietz Mayor of Szentendre Polgármesteri köszöntő 7
