Starting from black and white street sociophotos, Ádám Magyar has come to taking photos of faceless and anonymous crowds of people moving in cities. The mosaic-like perspective photos of the Squares series portray human figure as a tiny element of an infinite unity, where time and space unrestrictedly expand. The pulsation of life and the nature of existence are represented by human figures depicted as elementary particles which are unconsciously moving along inner laws in the infinite. The Squares series is not a perspective study, it does not catch one single moment. It took the artist several hours or days to take the photos making up the artwork. The photos of the series were taken in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong. In the video entitled Stainless, man is portrayed on the underground, the symbol of faceless loneliness of urban existence. The introverted figures travelling in public space almost create a shell around themselves, painstakingly respecting each other’s intimate sphere from a certain distance. The situation is determined by attractions and repulsions, providing the essence of solitude and alienation, but suggesting that “we are progressing confined together on a predetermined path in life.” “First, I looked for places where these problems were observable, and the rhythm corresponded to the image already existing on my mind. I wanted to see miniature people. I wanted to portray them as particles, therefore I created something with mock-up effect.” 1 1 Zoltán Somhegyi: Interview with photographer Ádám Magyar http://hvg.hu/hvgmuerto/20110209_ magyaradam_fotomuvesz_beszelgetes_muerto
