Marghescu Mária: Tudunk-e látni?

THE MANIFESTATION OF TRANSCENDENCE IN FINE ARTS The personal writing presents man’s transcendent search for ways from prehistoric times to the 21st century, emphasising the significant role of arts in this effort. The development of sciences, including the theory of relativity, space research and nuclear physics has made us realise that man is not a body carrying a soul, but a mind which has a body. Our outstanding philosophers who survived World War II., such as Béla Hamvas and Hans-Georg Gadamer, emphasised the metaphysical power inherent in art. It is not enough to understand it, we also have to learn how to see it. Since World War II., abstract art has often been able to express this transcendent force in a more colourful way. Spectators are supposed to find the key not only to themselves, but also to the artwork. In the decades of dictatorship, abstract art could not develop in Hungary. Establishing intellectual relationship with Western and Eastern cultures was impossible for artists. Nevertheless, the essay ’Chinese tint-drawing’ by Béla Hamvas suggests that despite total isolation, based on similar needs, almost the same conclusions and ideas arose on both sides of the Iron Curtain. As art can be defined as treasure hunt, we hope that this exhibition helps spectators find the treasure.
