THE LATE RENAISSANCE FORTIFICATION OF THE LOWER CASTLE IN FI LA KO VO, IN LIGHT OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS OF THE YEARS 2011 - 2015

The topic of the paper presented here, focuses on late renaissance fortification of the Lower Castle of Fil’akovo, in light of the archaeological excavations of the years 2011 - 2015. The purpose of the Castle Museum in Fil’akovo, in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences was to identify, analyze and evaluate the structure of late renaissance fortification. We can recognize three main construction phases of the fortification in the period between the 16th - 17th centuries, which contains in addition to the stonewall some palisades (5 lines of the palisade system signed as KO - K4) too. Some of these wooden stockades received a coating of clay, which improved the resistance of the wall. Besides the architectural elements, also prehistoric, medieval and early modern layers were excavated with a number of archaeological finds.
