Glass Factory Workers’ Culture in Salgótarján 1906—1946 by Zoltán Balogh

The end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was the period of the formation of modern manifacturing industry, and of the workforce of large- scale industry in Salgótarján. Parallel with working and starting movements for improving working conditions the workers’ professional and local communities established their own culture and entertainment facilities for spending leisure time exemplifying the truth from the Bible „man shall not live by bread alone”. They were the pursuers and enjoyers of their own culture at the same time and thus characterized with a double creative activity: creation and reception. In this unique creative process special value is added to the lifestyle of small communities’, and workers’ culture to be preserved in memory forever. The study aims at introducing the lifestyle, traditions and cultural activities of the workers of the glass factory in Salgótarján between 1906 and 1946.
