A Historical Survey of the Traditional Characteristics of Miners’ Identity from the Boom to Decline of Coal Mining in Salgótarján and its Surroundings

The present study is part of my thesis, in which I am examining the miners’ identity with the help of symbols forming, shaping and defining the self- consciousness for miners from the end of the 19th century up to present day. In this paper mainly historical, repository data and specialist literature facts are in the focus of attention, the influence of coal mining on lifestyle, settlement structure, social structure, everyday routine, and also the determining symbols and festive occasions of miners’ life and consciousness.

During my work I got help from workers of Nógrád Historical Museum and Mining Exhibition, members of Miners’ Associations in Salgótarján, to whom I wish to say thanks.
