Summary János Mir Possibility of vertebrate palaeontological investigations in Nógrádcounty The article is about the terrestrial deposits in the geological environment fo the Cerhát mountains (N-Hungary) and their vertebrate faunas and finds. 1. Cretaceous-oligocene period There are 5 terrestrial layers without any finds. l\a. Cretaceous bauxite ljb. Eocene clay, freshwater limestone, coal ljc. Lower oligocène red clay lfd. Fire clay layers in the „Hárshegy Sandstone Formation" lje. „Becske Formation" 2. Eggenburgian-Sarmata period 2\a. In the „Zagyvapálvalva Formation" we сап find the earliest hungarian proboscidean materials, but on the Ipolytarnóc footprint area there агепЧ real mastodon footprints. 2jb. In the „Salgótarján Browncoal Formation" there are numerous vertebrate finds. 2je. „Főt Formation" (Karpatian) 2\d. „Fertőrákos Limestone Formation" In these units there are only some unimportant finds. 2/e. Sarmata materials There are 2 fauna (Szurdokpüspöki, Hasznos) and some interesting other materials (Sámsonháza). 3. In the pannonian-pleistocene period there are expecially poor materials. Collec­ting vertebrate fossils is a main task of the new natural scientific museology in Pásztó. 388
