Vicze Magdolna: The symbolic meaning of Urn 715

motive on the shoulder, a „V" seated on top of a „W" is very interesting, as both the motive itself or its component parts (mainly the „W") appear quite often on decorated pottery, but in most cases presented upside down and never placed in a central or a significant position on the vessel like in this case. Most frequently these compositional elements play a supplementary role, like on the pots from Tószeg-Laposhalom, 48 Nagyrév-Zsidóhalom, 49 Tolna county, 50 Gyula-Törökzug, 51 DunafbTdvár-Kálvária, 52 DunaújvárosDuna-dűlő graves 706,814, 53 or from a different context, the already mentioned wall fragment from Tiszaug-Kéménytető. 54 A variation of the compositional motive can be seen on two Early Vatya urns, the first one is the above mentioned grave 349, 55 the other is a one handled urn known from Dunaújváros since the first half of the century, depicting a much more complex decoration. 56 A similarly significant positioning, i.e. on the central part of the vessel can be seen on the bowl found at Kisapostag-Kollár föld. 57 This bowl has been published as an integral part of the Kisapostag ceramic tradition, but as the presence of both Nagyrév and Early Vatya burials are obvious, 58 it is evident that this cemetery has the same dating as the early phase of DunaújvárosDuna-dűlő. This fact, the shape of the bowl, and the incised technique of the decoration (Kisapostag adornment is always based on rolled-stick), makes it certain that that bowl is part of the Early Vatya and not the Kisapostag pottery tradition. Although this motif was not unknown to the Kisapostag people, for it can be seen on a bronze hearth shaped pendant, also from the same cemetery, where this „V" over the „W" design was hammered into the centre of the pendant. 59 Further significant positioning of this pattern on pottery can be 48 BANNER-BÓNA-MÁRTON 1957, Fig. 1. 9, 25. 49 TOMPA 1936, Fig. 23. 5. 50 SCHREIBER 1984, Fig. 8. 3. 51 KÜRTI 1971,21-22. 52 SZABÓ 1992, Pl.
