H. Kelemen Márta–Lőrincz Barnabás: Egy lovagrendű tiszt Domitianus dunai háborúiban
An Equestrian Officer in Domitian's Danubian Wars Márta H. Kelemen - Barnabás Lőrincz In 1994 during earthwork in the fort of Esztergom a limestone votiv inscription was found (fig. 1-3.). The upper part of the limestone is missing (the first line absolutely, the second partly). /-/++ idiufs - fCilius)] Novatus who belonged to Qurina tribus and probably came from Baetica (fig. 4.) got the inscription set up. The Knight started his carrier in 85 A.D. as a praef(ectus) elec(torum) exped(itorum) ex Raet(ia) and took part in Domitian's Dacián war. Then he carried out his militia prima as the praefect of cohors III Brittonum veterana equitata. His troop was directed from Moesia Superior to Pannónia at the beginning of 89, where it became the garrison of Esztergom/Solva. The Knight took part in expeditio Germanica in 89 with his troop. Nova tus received his military medals {hasta pura, vexillum and corona muralis) from the emperor after this expedition and got this inscription set up in June 89. According to the new inscription the history of the garrison of Esztergom/ Solva changed the following way: The camp was set up at the beginning of the reign of Vespasianus and its first garrison troop was cohors I Augusta Ituraerorum. This troop was replaced by cohors III Brittonum veterana equitata, which garrisoned there not later then 98. It was probably replaced by cohors I Batavorum millitaria pia fidelis civium Romanorum and in 118/119 this troop was followed by cohors I Ulpia Pannoniorum militaria equitata, which garrisoned in Solva during the II-III. centuries. 254
