the reign of our state founder king, Saint Stephen. It presents briefly the ecclesiastical (the collegiate church, monastic and vicarian) then the secular education which gains a more and more important role from the 15th century, and it also presents the role of King Mátyás, Vitéz János, Pázmány Péter and Apáczai Csere János. There are mentioned Maria Ibrezia's public educational reforms, the Jacobine movement, the reform era and the educational purposes and the practical programes of the thinkers of the 1848-49 war of independence. It analyses in details József Eötvö's 1868 public educational law and the educational policy of the dualism. (This educational system, that pervailed until 1945 is summarized in a chart). The educational system of the Soviet Republic of 1919 followed by the educational efforts after the Trianon Treaty are also presented. Decisive changes will take place in the autumn of 1945 when the primary schools are reorganized and in July 16 1948 when the schools are nationalized. II. The structure of the educational system in the county up to the second World War With the help of the special literature we can get a complete picture as to the characteristics of the different levels of the educational system from the begining of our century up to the 1940s. The national data are completed with the data of the county refering to the nursery schools, schools that provided qualifications, the elementary and schools of professional training, civil schools, secondary schools and high schools. As to the above mentioned types of schools, there was place for the most important sociological characteristics and for the rules that guided them. Therefore both the most common traces and the local traces of the type of institute can be followed. III. The grouping of the public schools of the county The third unit of both the exhibition and the study present in details the training system of the public schools in the former Komárom and Esztergom counties and in the post-Trianon Komárom county. We grouped and characterized the public schools according to their maintainers. So we distinguished the state, the village, the Catholic, the Reformed, the Evangelical and the private schools (within this last those, too that were linked to the coalminer companies). As to the figures, the figures that are different from the nationwide ratio are presented in a comparative statistics. The summary tries to put in evidence those differences that are due to the differences between the sponsors' material and ideological possibilities and had an influence on the objective and personal conditions of education and on the content of the educational process. In our study there is room to present the data of the public education of the local nationalities. The study is concluded with a brief characterisation of the „repeater schools" which were closely connected to the elementary schools. 159
