Theatrical Companies in Esztergom in the Period of the Dualism Ph. D. Péter Pifkó The author takes in review the theatrical companies from Esztergom in a period between the Compromise of 1867 and 1918. In a period of 50 years 69 theatrical companies have been in and out from Eszter­gom. Most of them were mixed companies. They performed dramatic plays as well as plays about village life, comedies and operattas. We get a complete picture of the places where the companies held their performances. We can also read a detailed analysis about the dramas, comedies and musical plays presented by the companies. We can also get acquainted with the personality of some of the most outstanding stage-managers. There is place in the study for such complementary sights as tablea­ux, lyrics, dancing miscellanies. There is also place for presenting gala performances related to festive events and to significant historical events, as well as to marriages and adversaries. Besides the theatrical performances there were other side-shows that enticed the spectators to the theatre. In addition to performances they also organized interesting parties and dances, lb increase the number of the spectators the managers of the theatres organized benefit performances and guest performan­ces. The company organized benefit performances for the most popular actors. On the occasion of such performances the actors acted their favourite roles and they had great public success. For the guest performances there came outstanding actors from Budapest. Blaha Lujza, Molnár György, Prielle Kornélia, Újházi Ede, Hegyesi Mari, Haraszti Hermin, Boér Emma, Helvey Laura, Vízvári Gyula had great success. Within the study there are details about their performances and about their ovation in Esztergom. 119
