KÁROLY KERTI (1917 - 1986)

Károly Kerti graphic artist was born on 21 October 1917 in Magyarbóly (Baranya County).

He attended primary school in his native village; hewenttogrammarschool in Bonyhád.

From 1937 to 1942 he studied at the Department of Painting of the Budapest Képzőművészeti Főiskola (Fine Arts College) under the guidance of Ágoston Benkhardt, István Boldizsár and Jenő Elekfy.

After World War II, having come home from captivity in 1947, he settled down in Orosháza, where he worked as a drawing teacher until 1957.

It was in 1953 that he exhibited his works for the first time. In 1957 he moved to Tata, where he worked and taught until his death.

In 1957 he founded the JEL group of artists, with the sculptor Ferenc Brém, the painter Ernő Kóthay, the graphic artist Henrik Krajcsirovits and the painter János Végvári I. The association operated until 1977.

He conducted study tours in Romania (1961), Norway (1967), Czechoslovakia (1968) and France (1974).

He was a member of the Magyar Képző- és Iparművészek Szövetsége (Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists) and the Művészeti Alap (Art Funds).

Károly Kerti died on 29 November 1986 in Tata.
