TÓTH The leaders of the country were preoccupied with two major problems in 1509/1510. One of them was the rampant epidemic, the plague which, by that time, had literally arrived to the country. The other was an event which put the political elite of the country under pressure of making a decision about the anti-Venice treaty, founded on 10 December 1508. The four main powers, the empire, the French and Spanish kings and the Pope asked Vladislas Czech (1471-1516) and Hungarian (1490-1516) king to join their alliance. The would-be allies offered their participation in the campaign against the Turks and territorial expansion for the country in return for Hungary's actual military assistance. The situation was exacerbated by the rivalry between palatine Imre Perényi and Dalmatian-Croatian-Slavonic Ban, András Bajnai Both, as a result of which there was a civil war atmosphere 27
