va Fülöp Throughout the history of Tóváros, the one-time market-town of the Tata-Gesztes estate, the organizing power was provided by the township's location and the resulting commercial potentials (transit traffic due to major trunk roads, the vicinity of the Danube, fairs). Domestic commodity production and sale increased from the 1740s on, which created a favourable position for the development of the settlement. The documents of the Tata-Gesztes Eszterházy estate (preserved in the family archive groups in the National Archives of Hungary provide excellent and hitherto unutilized source-material for the survey of the life of the market-town and of the operation of the individual and corporative bodies of the oppidum. The publication of data (the relationship with the comitat and the estate; incomes and expenses of the township; the constitution and proportions of other expenses etc.) is intended to contribute to the description of the operation of the administration in Tata at the end of the 18

th century. We hope that it will trigger further study in this field. 19
