Kisné Cseh Julianna–Petényi Sándor: Római- és középkori lelőhelyek Tataán

Roman and medieval sites in Tata Julianna Cseh Kis - Sándor Petényi Owing to its favourable geographical setting, Tata has been an inhabited settlement since the Palaeolithic age. Water - a primary settlement factor that supplies drinking water, food and defence - provided optimal conditions for settlement; moreover, up till now it has determined and often restricted the location and size of settlements. Owing to these "limits" it is exceedingly difficult to compile the town's Roman and medieval topography. Conditions determined by nature basically limit the area suitable for settlement; consequently, inhabitants of "later periods" disarrange or destroy the inheritance left behind by earlier settlers. The present study gives a summary of already known yet often unpublished data (excavations, rescue excavations and surveys conducted by Endre Bíró, Sarolta Szatmári, Eva V. Vadász and Gábor Vékony) and, in the possession of subsequent results, it attempts to determine the size of the Roman and medieval settlement. Though the work conducted in recent years did not make it possible to prove the truth of some notions that are rooted in literature and local tradition (Fürdő Street - Saint Peter and Paul abbey, Kossuth Square - the Saint Blaise church), owing to our surveys, our knowledge concerning the Roman and medieval settlement has increased considerably and thus we are in a better position to determine its age and size. 25
