Esztergom had suffered more sieges under the 15 years war. It weakness which had came from its location and its small number of defending force - underlined by the fact that besieging forces had always been successful. It took a longer time for the greater Turkish forces to capture Tata (4 or 5 days), than it took for the Habsburg forces (2 or 3 days) which used more advanced warfare techniques. József Kelenik: The Position and Role of Tata within the Border Fort System in the Last Third of the XVI.th, Century Summary The historiography of the Turkish occupation treated the border fort system as a line of castles, board fences, and watchman's houses until now. The historical ecological researches proved on the contrary proved that not the castles but the natural obstacles, primarily the waters had been the basis of the system. The 1577 war council reshaped the fortress system according to the natural endowments. Within this system Tata had been an important crossing point of an large swamp line. There had been an excellent road started from Esztergom along the Danube, but it was interrupted at the village of Almás, by a huge flood area which was continuos till Szőny. In case of a higher water level the village of Füzitő became an island and the flood came even up to the village of Naszály. At these times the waters coming from the Által stream and from the springs North of Tata spread all over the valley. The springs and the steams maintained the swamp even when the flood was gone. It could had been crossed only at Tata even in the 1760's. The significance of Tata under the 15 years war increased for the opposing forces since it was needed to secure the Danube waterway. 157
